CAICE investigators perform cutting edge research on complex aerosol chemistry.

Mission

The mission of CAICE is to transform our ability to accurately predict the impact of aerosols on our environment.

This involves understanding the composition, physical properties, and climate properties of sea spray aerosol (SSA), which contribute significantly to global aerosol concentrations.

To meet this extraordinary challenge CAICE has integrated the essential expertise of experimental and computational chemists leaders working closely with world-class marine biologists, oceanographers, and computer scientists. This powerful approach has yielded insights into the chemical composition and physical properties of SSA at an unprecedented level of molecular detail.

CAICE results are now being used to answer outstanding questions in aerosol chemistry and chemistry-climate interactions, explain longstanding discrepancies in field observations in marine environments, and bridge gaps among molecular level theory, laboratory experiments, field observations, and atmospheric models.

CAICE findings broadly impact many fields including atmospheric science, physical chemistry, public health, and oceanography. The tools developed within CAICE will prove useful in chemical research involving soft materials, nanomaterials, analytical instrument and small sensor development, and colloidal science.

CAICE studies demonstrate the centrality of chemistry in controlling environmental processes of major societal importance.
