Dr. Prather honored with the 2024 NAS Award in Chemical Sciences

We’re thrilled to announce a monumental achievement within our community: Our director, Dr. Kimberly Prather, has been honored with the prestigious 2024 National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Award in Chemical Sciences. Every year, the organization honors a select group of 20 individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary accomplishments in science. This award not only celebrates Dr. Prather’s groundbreaking work but also highlights the impact of her research on the broader scientific landscape.

In their words, “Prather’s research has revolutionized our understanding of atmospheric aerosols and their impact on air quality, climate, and human health. This award not only celebrates Dr. Prather’s groundbreaking work but also highlights the impact of her research on the broader scientific landscape and as an active leader and communicator during the pandemic.

Established in 1978, the NAS Award in Chemical Sciences is presented annually to honor innovative research in the chemical sciences that contributes to a better understanding of the natural sciences and to the benefit of humanity. Prather has been an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2020. Her receipt of this award underscores her dedication to pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery and her commitment to making a positive impact on society through her research.

“Professor Prather is one of the most distinguished aerosol chemists in the world and this honor recognizes that her work stands out amongst all research in chemistry,” said Margaret Leinen, vice chancellor for marine sciences at UC San Diego and director of Scripps Oceanography. “The award also highlights the importance of Professor Prather’s work for humanity, calling attention to the role of aerosols in air quality, health and climate. We are proud that she has been able to do so much of this groundbreaking work at UC San Diego.”

Join us in watching her accept the award at the 161st NAS Annual Meeting on April 28th, as it will be broadcast online.
